Here we have a Canadian Pottery French Butter Dish.  This handy item was created to keep butter at just the right temperature on your table.  The reservoir holds water which moderates the temperature of the butter.  Pack soft butter into the opening and then fit it together so that the water seals the butter away from the air.  In this way the butter cannot go rancid in the heat of the day (when left on the table between meals) and still stays soft enough to spread.  Never fight with hard butter straight out of the fridge again!
